10 Inexpensive Ways to Save the Earth
Doing one’s part in saving the Earth can sometimes be an expensive undertaking, yet there are inexpensive things that each of us can each do to help keep our planet healthy.
1 Become a localvore: Whenever possible buy locally grown or produced items. The closer to home an item is made the less energy is used to transport it and the less pollution produced.
2 Grow your own vegetable: While this may not always be practical on a large scale, anyone who has a yard can set out a few tomato plants and sow zucchini.This/tag helps explain it more.
3 Compost your vegetable and fruit waste. This will give you a naturally fertile soil to add to your vegetable garden while sending less garbage to the landfill.
4 Recycle: Everything you can reuse is less that goes to a landfill. It also means less energy and resources used for replacements.
5 Stop letting heat and AC escape through windows and doors. Even if you can’t replace them, a little tape, felt or caulking can do wonders for keeping the inside air in and the outside air out.
6 Learn to enjoy a wider range of temperatures. With the natural ability of our houses to retain heat or cold, and some wardrobe adjustments we can expand the time when neither heat nor AC is used.
7 Wash clothes in cold water this will not only save energy but extend the life of your clothes as well.
8 Adjust the hot water tank to reflect the season. Hotter for winter to compensate for cold pipes, cooler water for summer and remember diluting hot water with cold is a waste.
9 Cook in bulk when possible and use the most energy efficient method.
10 Use nature to heat/cool your home. Awnings, shade trees and blinds can keep the sun’s rays from heating your home in summer, but let the sun shine in during the day in winter.
